Boston Brace vs. Gensingen Brace

One of our patients made the switch from the Boston Brace (left) to the Cheneau Gensingen Brace (right). Her new brace will be easier to conceal under clothing and should be easier to put on and take off due to front-closing straps.

The Gensingen brace closes in front. The Boston brace closes in back. This causes some kids difficulty getting it on and off. The Boston brace is compressive and lacks breathing space at the spinal concavities for a corrective 3D effect. This Schroth method principle is why the Gensingen brace offers the potential for curve reduction.
Brace fit affects outcome. This 14-year-old from NY came to see us for the Gensingen brace®. His parents realized that Boston brace their son was wearing was ineffective (two left x-rays). His in-the-Boston-brace x-ray (2nd from left) shows that while his lumbar curve was slightly improved after 2 months in-brace, his thoracic curve had doubled! After 6 months in the symmetric brace, his out-of-brace x-ray (3rd from left) shows the lumbar correction did not hold. Unfortunately, his thoracic curve progressed. Upon evaluation, it was apparent that poor brace fit played a role in his curve progression. This poor result prompted a surgical consult in March 2015. Not wanting to go the route of scoliosis surgery, his parents opted to change this boy’s brace to an asymmetric Gensingen brace. At that time his curves were at 44° thoracic/28° lumbar and to date are improved and stable at 30º/29º.

Chêneau Gensingen vs. Other Chêneau Braces

For more information regarding the differences between Chêneau Braces, read our blog “Not All Cheneau Braces are Created Equal.”

The Cheneau-Gensingen brace design process is standardized via computer-aided design and produced via computer-aided manufacture (CAD/CAM). All Gensingen Braces are custom-designed by Dr. Weiss, in Germany. Each Scoliosis 3DC brace is manufactured the same or next day and usually fit within 24 hours of the first scan.
This girl decided to switch from a another Chêneau brace to our Chêneau-Gensingen brace, which is lighter & more easily concealed due to less material in the hip and chest area.
These x-rays correspond to the patient pictured above showing that the Gensingen brace (GBW) provides the same patient with a superior in-brace correction.
