The Cheneau Gensingen® Brace: CAD/CAM bracing for scoliosis
The Chêneau-Gensingen® Brace is an asymmetric, rigid TLSO for scoliosis designed with openings at the spinal concavities. The design is based on the principle that scoliosis should be addressed in 3-dimensions for a successful outcome. The brace is Schroth Method compatible, and like the Schroth Method, aims to improve the physical appearance of scoliosis. The brace openings allow for Schroth rotational breathing which means that while the brace is worn each breath is a corrective breath! The Cheneau-Gensingen’s many features make it, in our opinion, the best scoliosis brace for both growing adolescents and adults.
The brace is an overcorrection brace. That means it strives for curve reduction (for adolescents) (1) rather than simply halting curvature like traditional braces like the Boston Brace. Patients report it is lighter and more tolerable than compressive scoliosis braces.
Another distinction is the brace’s proven track record. CAD/CAM technology allows for improved fit. In-brace corrections of 30 – 50% and are achieved consistently for adolescents, and for some young adults who have chosen to be fit with the brace. Results vary by individual. The CAD/CAM technology means that Chêneau bracing is standardized, meaning there is less chance of practitioner variance with bracing.
We introduced the Chêneau-Gensingen® brace in the U.S. in 2013. We are very excited about the results our patients have been achieving! The brace is used extensively in Germany and now internationally. It is manufactured in North America exclusively for patients fit at Scoliosis 3DC℠.
Once fabrication is complete, Dr. Moramarco makes adjustments for optimal customization and comfortable. We have the capability to fit a brace in a four-day turnaround for local, out-of-state and out-of-country patients – when scheduled accordingly.
The brace creator is Dr. Hans-Rudolf Weiss, third generation Schroth family – a family whose legacy is a lifetime of dedication to the advancement of conservative treatment of scoliosis. He has worked tirelessly on scoliosis brace development since the early 1990s. His mission has been to create a lightweight yet effective, state-of-the-art Chêneau brace for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) – a brace that aims at improving posture. He also set out to make a brace that addresses severe curves as well as moderate since curves in excess of 40º are not typically braced. At that point many doctors begin to look to surgery when an adolescent is growing. The Gensingen brace® is also known as the Weiss-Chêneau or GBW.
During his tenure at the Asklepios Katharina Schroth Clinic, and since, Dr. Weiss has overseen the treatment of tens of thousands of patients with scoliosis. When a brace is difficult for patients to wear the likelihood of compliance is significantly reduced. It is one of the great challenges of scoliosis bracing for adolescents. Dr. Weiss set out to to improve comfort to improve compliance. Our patients who have worn other braces first, then switched, report he has succeeded!
Bracing for adolescents with scoliosis requires a strict wearing schedule. The advanced design of our brace helps kids adhere more easily to their prescribed wearing schedule. As a result, the potential for reduced curvature and improved appearance of the back and trunk are more likely achieved – as is the ultimate goal: to avoid scoliosis surgery.
Dr. Moramarco has traveled to Germany numerous times for extensive training in the Chêneau-Gensingen®, with Dr. Weiss and several German orthotists fitting the brace. There is a distinct advantage to having a physician who is a Schroth exercise expert fit the brace because of the breadth of experience and extent of knowledge regarding the nuances of the scoliotic spine.
The Chêneau-Gensingen® can be used independently or in conjunction with our Schroth Best Practice® scoliosis exercise program. Those opting for our two-pronged approach are yielding excellent results and improving their chances for the most promising outcome at skeletal maturity.
